My Story

I’m Anna, co-owner and Academic director of TeacherTrain. I’m a passionate, experienced teacher and teacher educator and have taught English to all ages and levels worldwide and worked with pre- and in-service teachers in over 30 countries for organisations such as the British Council, International House, NILE, local ministries and leading publishers, face-to-face and online. Just like you, at times I wondered how to further my professional learning journey. Fast forward 24 years and my expertise with English as an Additional Language (EAL), primary learners and IELTS has brought me all over the world as a teacher and teacher educator. If I have learned one thing over the years it is this: Teachers matter. You matter. We matter. Our teaching can make all the difference in students’ willingness and  enjoyment of the learning journey. Teachers can transform the language learning process so students not just simply survive, but can truly thrive!

Consciously, we teach what we know; unconsciously, we teach who we are. Alice Hamachek

My philosophy

My special interest lies in teacher education, educational psychology, and empowering educators, particularly in low-resource contexts. I believe teacher development should focus on optimizing students’ learning opportunities while reigniting the joy of teaching and learning.

My passion is to inspire teachers to find creative, engaging ways to empower their learners—regardless of the resources available. But true learning can only happen when we create supportive, inclusive environments where every student feels valued and safe. This is why I emphasise the role of social and emotional competences—for both teachers and students—as the cornerstone of effective education.  I am the author of Activities for Social-Emotional Learning: Developing social-emotional competences in the ELT classroom (DELTA Publishing) and as an education consultant, writer, course designer and teacher educator, I am dedicated to helping teachers cultivate these skills and integrate them into language learning as to create more meaningful learning experiences.

Being a teacher is not about teaching, it is about making learning happen. Anna Hasper

My learning

I have to admit, I’m a self-confessed addict to learning and strongly believe that as educators we need to keep learning. Besides a post-graduate certificate in Primary Education (PGCE) from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, I’ve got an MA in Public Administration and Master’s degree in Education from the UK. I have specialised in English as an additional language (EAL) and completed my CELTA, YL-extension and DELTA from Cambridge. I’m a CELTA & DELTA tutor and assessor for Cambridge English Assessment. I’m a PhD student at the University of Auckland, New Zealand where my research interests centre around language teacher educators’ (LTE) professional learning with an emphasis on motivation and social-emotional wellbeing. I strive to keep growing in my field and make a difference in learners’ experiences by sharing my knowledge, skills and experiences with teachers like you, through my writing activities (for e.g. Modern English Teacher), webinars (for publishers), workshops and publications
