This teacher’s guide highlights the importance of explicitly teaching vocabulary in the young learner classroom. The understanding of written text means that we need to move our learners from using social, everyday vocabulary to talk to recognising and using more abstract vocabulary used in writing. Learners need extensive
vocabulary building, multiple exposures to the new vocabulary, and plentiful opportunities to speak
in sentences, using the new vocabulary if we want them to be enabled to read and write in English. This booklet provides ideas on how to go about this in your guided reading lessons in a structured, principled way.
