Even though you might be teaching GenZ learners, many of our learners are new to online learning…
- Make sure you take time to introduce your learners to the platform or tools you’ve selected to use for your online learning. Set them ‘running around’ the platform tasks; can they turn on their microphone? Type one thing you can see right now in the chatbox etc. During your lessons build on what they already know and explore new tools and activities once they can manage the basic steps.
- If you get them to do asynchronous tasks (when you are not online with them) using a new App, make sure you give them clear instructions and enough time to dedicate to it. Don’t forget that most of these App use English which might increase their processing time. A good idea could be to upload a step-by-step instruction sheet or recording, if possible in English and their first language which they can download after the class and go through step by step.
- Planning online classes might take longer than planning good-old F2F classes. When you are still trying to work out how to share screen, annotate and prepare a slide deck with tasks. Don’t overdo it. Start with what you already know and build on this, extend your repertoire once you have the hang of something. One step at a time…
